At The English International College, we are committed to supporting every student on their individual learning journey. Our Learning Support Team works collaboratively across all phases of the school to ensure that every child has the tools, confidence and guidance they need to thrive—academically, socially and emotionally. We recognise that no two learners are the same, and our comprehensive provision reflects this belief through a range of specialist programmes and services designed to meet diverse needs.
From our Stepping Stones programme, which helps younger students build strong foundations in English and core subjects, to tailored Learning Support sessions that nurture confidence and skill development throughout the Primary years, we provide targeted, compassionate assistance that allows children to flourish. Alongside this academic support, our dedicated Wellbeing and Counselling service ensures that emotional health and personal growth remain central to The EIC experience, while our Educational Psychologist works closely with staff, students and families to create evidence-based strategies that optimise learning for all.
Together, these elements form a cohesive network of care and expertise—empowering every student to reach their potential and enjoy a positive, fulfilling school life. Each student reaches their goals through Empathy, Integrity and Community values. The EIC - Where Every Individual Counts.
Stepping Stones is a two year programme aimed at students in Years 1 and 2, the programme has been designed to help students immerse themselves in the English language and fill any curriculum content gaps in their knowledge that they may have.
At EIC, we firmly believe in the individual learning journey of each child and Stepping Stones creates a pathway for children to be able to confidently transition and meet the expectations of the school. Key Stage 1 is where children are exposed to the National Curriculum for the first time and there are a plethora of objectives and goals for children to aim for.
Stepping Stones allows us to tailor the learning experience to the individual needs of each child, ensuring that they are able to access the National Curriculum with confidence and a good foundation of knowledge and understanding.
Students are taught in small groups by our fully qualified and experienced Stepping Stones Coordinator, Miss Debra. The focus of the programme is English and Maths and the lessons are timetabled during the school day. Children are assigned to a class and a class teacher, and will take part in all other subjects with their peers. Initially, students will follow the programme 5 days a week, but as they progress, this will begin to be reduced until it is evident that they are ready to cope with the curriculum full-time in the main classroom.
It is important to us that children in our care are well-rounded, well-supported and confident to be able to navigate not only environments where they feel comfortable, but also those where they need some extra help to reach their full potential. The EIC Stepping Stones programme can help them get there.
* New from January 2025 Stepping Stones will be expanding the programme to students in Year 3 and 4.
As Learning Support Coordinator and teacher, I oversee the coordination of learning support across the Infant and Primary school, working closely with teachers, parents and specialists to ensure that all students receive the support they need to achieve their potential and feel confident in the classroom.
We recognise that every child learns in different ways and brings their own unique strengths to the classroom and this is reflected in our teaching, which aims to be flexible and responsive to individual needs. At some point in their school journey, many children benefit from a little extra support to help them build confidence and overcome challenges. This is provided in small groups and occasional one-to-one sessions to help students build confidence and strengthen key skills, offering all students the boost they need to thrive and feel successful in their learning.
EIC is passionate about fostering a positive school environment where kindness, respect and inclusion is at the heart of everything. As the school counsellor, my role is to support the emotional, behavioural and social development of the students providing them with the tools to navigate through challenging situations on their journey to becoming the best version of themselves.
I provide a safe, confidential space where all members of the EIC community can express their thoughts and feelings, explore their goals, overcome challenges and build skills for success both inside and outside school. In addition to one to one support I also deliver workshops and seminars for year groups, parents and staff tailored to the school’s ethos and wellbeing needs.
As an Educational Psychologist, I help to personalise learning by identifying each student’s unique strengths, needs and ways of approaching learning. I work closely with teachers to develop tailored strategies, targeted support and skill-building opportunities so that every learner can reach their full potential.
I provide support both for individual students and groups. Currently, I run Study Skills workshops across the Secondary School and contribute to the PSHE curriculum. At EIC, we place great emphasis on teaching students how to learn and equipping them with the skills they need to thrive as confident, capable adults. I also carry out learning assessments to gain a fuller understanding of a young person’s learning profile and to recommend the most effective strategies. These may also include assessments to establish eligibility for additional exam arrangements, such as extra time.
My role also ensures that evidence-based approaches shape whole-school practice, from our Smartphone-Free School policy to our rewards programme.
