At
School . . .
During the week, the students have the opportunity
to participate in a variety of activities outside
the formal teaching situation. For Years 3 to 9 organised
activities are offered, and these vary from all the
normal sporting activities to keyboarding, art and
drama clubs etc. In addition, Complementary Studies
sessions are held covering current affairs, critical
thinking and problem solving, general knowledge, debating,
European cultures, ethics and morals, film and music
appreciation. Sports matches are regularly organised
with teams from other schools, and the College has
an excellent record in these matches and tournaments.
Outside school hours, optional activities are offered
such as karate, music - individual or group instrument
lessons in woodwind, strings, guitar and piano - drama
classes and examinations in Speech and Drama (LAMDA),
soccer coaching with FIFA awards, in addition to the
residential and daily trips to places and activities
of interest. The College offers four evenings of after
school sports including swimming, cross country, football,
volleyball, athletics, basketball and fencing.
And Beyond . . .
The College is in an excellent geographical position
on the Costa del Sol. Situated mid-way between Gibraltar
and Malaga, there is a choice of many exciting visits.
Every February a week-long trip to the ski slopes
of the Sierra Nevada is organised for the Primary
students and a trip to Andorra or beyond for the Secondary
school. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have the opportunity
to participate in one-week residential trips during
the Summer Term. Year 7 go to Toledo and Cuenca, Year
8 and 9 go to France and Germany, whilst the older
Primary children spend several days visiting Coto
Doñana and also the farm school, “La
Granja”, where they learn about life in rural
Spain. The historic towns of Ronda, Sevilla, Cordoba
and Granada, rich and valuable sites of interest to
geographers, historians and art lovers, are all within
easy travelling distance. Regular educational trips
are organised to support the school curriculum.
For Years 5 to 8, there are residential Geography
and Biology field study courses at El Chorro, Almoraima,
Alhambra and the Nerja caves. Numerous day visits
are arranged to such places as Los Barrios power station,
the Alcazaba in Malaga, quarries in Marbella and to
Fuengirola to carry out pool and river studies. Visits
are also organised to the business districts of Marbella
and Fuengirola and to local factories and offices.
Communication skills are encouraged and honed throughout
the school, with particular emphasis on dramatic involvement.
Primary School and Secondary School Shows are a regular
feature of campus life and the Sixth Form Christmas
Revue is an entertainment highlight of the school
year. Every summer representatives from the Sixth
Form travel to New York and Geneva to take part in
the Global Young Leaders’ Conference where they
participate in political simulations and have the
chance to meet global leaders.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
The EIC is one of the very few schools in Spain licensed
to operate this respected award scheme. Under its
auspices, entrants are encouraged to undertake a service
to the community, demonstrate a skill, take part in
a physical activity and participate in an expedition.
It is not about level of attainment, but about improvement
and dedication. The entrants themselves get a great
deal of fun out of the scheme in addition to a definite
sense of achievement - an achievement that is recognised
by employers and universities. Only three gold medals
have been awarded in Spain - and all to EIC students.
LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art)
LAMDA is the largest Speech and Drama Examination
Board in the UK and has a reputation of excellence
- a fact recognised by colleges and universities throughout
the UK. There are a series of examinations in speech,
communication and performance, all accredited by the
QCA, and the school has recently become one of the
few recognised examination centres in Spain. These
examinations are advantageous to students who wish
to enter the theatrical profession and are complementary
to studies in English, Theatre Studies and Drama,
and related subjects at A level and university. The
examinations are equally useful for developing skills
in communication, which are needed in modern life,
professionally, socially and in the business world.
Summer School
The College also organises Summer School Courses
during the month of July, which are open not only
to its own students, but to all interested families
in surrounding communities.
