Primary - Year 5
Overview Summer 2010 5A, 5H

It has been a really busy term for Year Five! As well as regular lessons, we have participated in sports competitions (with great success), made a model solar system and constructed our own Greek Masks. The spirit and enthusiasm of the children made the term both enjoyable and valuable.

It’s All Greek To Me

In March, the whole of Year Five arrived in school looking as if they had been transported back in time over 2000 years. Fortunately this was not the case, but we were having a ‘Greek Day’ to support the work we had carried out in topic lessons throughout the term. We started the day with an Ancient Olympics, including a pledge to the Gods (well, the teachers), a slightly shortened marathon, a wrestling event, a javelin contest and even a chariot race! This was followed up by the slightly more relaxing activity of creating Greek City State Banners. The Greek Banquet was delicious, and in the afternoon we used our masks to rehearse and then perform our own Greek Myths. The day was a great success, and thanks must go to the parents for all the help creating the costumes.

Scientists in Action

Towards the end of the term, we participated with great gusto in a number of science week activities. Rockets were designed and trialled, ensuring fairness by attempting to eliminate all variables other than the one being tested. We realised when designing that they would need to have a pointed cone to work against air resistance, but most of us did not realise the importance of making the front of the rocket heavier than the back.

We also went to great lengths to design an environmental superhero, and constructed a container out of only newspaper and tape to support an egg. Some of them were dropped from the top of the Key Stage Two block without cracking the egg inside.

There’s plenty more planned for the summer term, so let’s finish the year on a high!

Welcome to Year 5! It’s a brand new school year with lots of exciting things going on. Firstly we welcome Mr Andrew to EIC and the Year 5 team; he is teaching 5A this year alongside Miss Harriet, who will teach 5H. Let’s make it a year to remember!

Year 5 Get Gruesome!

Our Science topic this term is Keeping Healthy and we have been identifying what constitutes a healthy, balanced diet. Watch this space for our menus which we have been working on in ICT. As part of the unit, we have been looking at how the body functions and how we keep it healthy; one of the focuses is the human heart and respiratory system. We were lucky enough to go along to the Science Labs in the secondary school and dissect a sheep’s heart! It was pretty gruesome but a lot of fun. We learnt lots of new vocabulary and even had the chance to get our hands dirty and see the heart up close and personal! Check out our pictures, don’t you think we will make good scientists in the future?

Hazard, Help, Hello…CPR

In conjunction with our Science topic, we were lucky enough for Mr Gibson to come into our classes and teach us basic CPR. We learnt about how our respiratory system works and why CPR might be needed. This is an important and vital skill. Not only did we get to listen to the useful information but after a demonstration from Mr Gibson, we got to have a go ourselves. In groups we practised looking for HAZARDS, calling for HELP and seeing if there would be any response by calling HELLO. We then practised our compressions and mouth to mouth skills. It´s not as easy as it looks…but we gave it a good go!
