Primary - Reception
Overview
Healthy Eating

To launch this terms topic on Food and Healthy Eating the Reception children took a walk to our local Mercadona supermarket, accompanied by our new visitors to the class – Ned Gnome and Florence Flower. Here they were able to witness at first hand the stacking of shelves with fresh bread, the weighing of fresh goods, packing bags and the final payment of our choices. Being able to visualise at first hand the layout of the shop into food types and food groups has led to much discussion and learning about Dairy products, meats, pasta, fruit, vegetables and fish.

Such a practical start to the term will enable us to further the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world through learning about where these foods originate and basic food chains. The children are already making cross-curricular links with Mathematics, learning about money, weighing and fractions, bringing learning to life.

The aliens have landed…The beginning of this year saw the arrival of twin aliens, Bob and Pob. Their arrival caused much excitement and has led to many a learning opportunity along the way. Through their untidy nature, we have been able to teach them, and learn a little Ourselves about respecting property and the golden rules.

It became evident that we did not look the same as our Martian visitors so we made comparisons between them and us throughout our 'Ourselves' topic. Another exciting time during this first half term was the visit from Miss Rachael's baby Will, which provided the opportunity to make comparisons between babies, children and adults.

Following this, a hospital was set up. This came in handy for when our next visitor, Winnie the witch, hit a pine tree on her way to the annual witches' party and was able to be treated in the Reception class hospital. On recovery Winnie decided to thank the Reception children by turning the classroom into a witches den for a party of their own.

After half term a mystery space rocket appeared and it turned out the aliens had returned with their cousin Sob. They embarked on a number adventure involving broken license plates, codes and the space police. Who knows what adventures are to follow…
