Primary - PE

With the arrival of Christmas holidays, it is time to reflect on the achievements of the Primary students in the world of Sport.

Swimming

As always our first "major" was the Inter School Swimming Gala. The history of an unbeaten record adds to the pressure for both pupils and teachers! Luckily the children thrive in this environment whilst the teachers spend many a sleepless night!

It is amazing how such young athletes identify with the ethos of excellence in this event.

They keenly compete to be part of the elite team, turning out on cool windy days, giving up holidays, weekends and  more importantly lunchtime Football in order to perfect stroke technoque, tumble  turns and racing dives. It is a shame that not all children can compete in the event, but school criteria is to select the best team. As shown by the results of swimmers in our "B" team  this year, we know we have amazing strength in depth. All swimmers will have the opportunity in june to display their prowess in the Key stage 1 and 2 displays.

Results

Participating schools were Benalmadena International College, Sotogrande international School and EIC.

EIC won 33 out of 42 events, tied first place in three events losing only 6 races.

Well done. Congratulations to everyone. If you have the chance join a Swimming Club in the winter. We start our training again in the Spring.

Basketball

In November we were invited by Sotogrande to play Basketball. The invitation came as a bit of a surprise as we had been concentrating on Football. However after a couple of hurried coaching sessions our year 5 and 6 teams set off for Cádiz Province. We were slightly in awe of the huge Sports Hall and the Hullaballoo of the home supporters. However once the games started reinforced by tips from Miss Nicola and Mr Izatt the players performed superbly.

EIC won three out of the four matches and were warmly congratulated by the Sotogrande PE staff.

Football

The main sport for the second part of the Autumn Term has been Football.  EIC have hosted two tournaments. Participating schools were BIC, Laude, Swans and Sotogrande.  In the first event with Swans and BIC we only lost 2 out of 7 matches. In the second tournament with Sotogrande and Laude, EIC won 3 out of the 4 year groups. Well done to all competitors.

A special mention must be made of Adrian Alvarez de Toledo and Jemima Cusack who were both nominated for the Principal's Commendation for their achievements in PE.

We are now looking forward to more fixtures and challenges in 2010. Well done again, and keep practicing.

Primary Sports Days

We were fortunate this year to be blessed with fine weather for both Primary School Sports Days. We were also fortunate, once again, to have excellent support from parents. This is so important for staff and pupils alike in providing the atmosphere to which the competitors respond.

As has become customary in EIC Sports Days, the events began with the pupils, looking fit and enthusiastic, marching, with their team and class banners, to the music of Sousa. Each class had been previously divided into Sports Day Teams, with the children representing Cheetahs, Leopards, Panthers or Tigers.

In Key Stage One every child participated in all 7 events. They were able to show parents the running, jumping and throwing skills learnt in PE lessons.

All Key Stage Two pupils participated in at least 6 of the 8 events. Competitors had been selected previously in PE lessons for the High and Long Jump events as these events take considerably longer. We were happy to introduce new events, thanks to the equipment purchased, namely low hurdles and shot put. It will not be long before we will be looking for a new Daley Thomson in the Decathlon!

At the end of a day that ran like clockwork the Tigers were declared overall winners. Well done all you Tigers! The Victor Ludorum was shared by Alex Nielsen (3A) and Joseph Copeland (4D), with Tom Dennis (6N) as runner up. Elle Andersen was the Victrix Ludorum (4S) with runner up Natalya Gordon (5H).

Finally, many thanks to teachers and students alike who helped so ably with marshalling and judging events

London Olympics will be held in 2012!

The Autumn Term began with the primary children making full use of our fantastic swimming facility, complete with new sunshades. The main emphasis for KS2 was the feverish preparation for the annual “we shall not lose!” Inter School Swimming Gala. Every available minute was taken up with training. The enthusiasm and commitment were amazing with maximum attendance at the after school sessions. The hard work paid off as EIC gained 32 out of 44 1st places, a superb performance!

In the 2nd half of the Term, Football ruled, and the talented players from Years 3,4,5 &6 notched up resounding wins against Calahonda, Benalmadena and Sotogrande schools.

A new sport was introduced during the Spring term, Tag Rugby, and it is proving very popular with pupils and teachers! Basketball has been our other main sport, and we are hoping to arrange a match against Sotogrande in the next few weeks. While KS 2 have been striving for excellence and enjoyment on the sports field, KS 1 have been enjoying Dance lessons with themes such as Butterflies, The Circus and Carnival time as well as learning the basic Games and Swimming skills necessary to follow in the successful footsteps of our older pupils.

The highlight of this term will be EIC’s popular and exciting Sports Days at the end of this term, and as you can see from the photos Early years are thoroughly enjoying their Training sessions! We hope to see many of you Mums and Dads in the Parents' races, so dust off your sports shoes and get training! See you there, April 1st and 2nd!
