As I have said elsewhere, one of the joys of working at EIC is the freedom to think outside the box!
To give you an example; one of the units in Year 6 is Multimedia Presentation. In the UK this is usually covered by teaching the pupils to use PowerPoint. I wanted to push beyond that, so I teach PowerPoint in Year 4 (two years earlier than children usually encounter it in the UK) and in Year 6 the students now learn stop-motion animation!
Visual Literacy is something that has recently begun to be discussed in depth in educational circles. In an age when we are all increasingly bombarded by imagery of all kinds, it is important that our students can understand, control and manipulate media in a way that makes it meaningful and relevant to them. It is a wide ranging subject that crosses into literacy, art and the way we see and make sense of our world (PHSE).
Here are some examples of the animations made by Year 6 in the last academic year. Not only did the children edit the finished mini-movies themselves, they wrote the scripts, designed and made the sets, produced, directed and animated it all and then added the soundtrack (The Aquarium by Camille Saint - Saëns).
I wonder if we have any budding Spielbergs here?
