POETRY WEEK 15th - 19th OCTOBER 2001
|
[BOSWELL:] Sir, what is poetry?
[JOHNSON:] Why Sir, it is much easier to say what it is not. We all know what light is; but it is not easy to tell what it is.

HISTORY OF MAN
In the season of darkness,
The epoch of belief
The actions of mankind make ripples
in the lake of humanity.
And in their wake
Tortured souls wander endlessly
Through the arena of time.
Where the roar of the crowd is deafening
Man stands alone.

STONE COLD
As I wander aimlessly,
Trudging through the thick mud.
Weaving through the towering trees,
Lost in an endless forest.
Stone Cold a mixture of fear and anger,
Torn betwen left and right.
Stuck in an impossible maze
Leading to an unknown destination.
James - Winner Year 9.

SORROW
The crystal droplet from your eye,
Running just past your satin tie.
Staring at the bleak white wall,
Hearing not even the loudest call.
Sorrow heavy on your heart,
Due to loved ones you must part.
Deep inside your distant soul,
Happiness is now your goal.

STAND IN SILENCE
As we stumble and struggle
through the mud
as we leave people behind that can't carry on
I look back in pain,
As I think 'this still hasn't ended'
I look around me
and see my companions so tired
that their eyes are falling
They can't stand up
How long is this going to last
Quick, quick the gas masks!
As we hurry to cover our faces
I look in the corner,
there's always one that gets left behind!
As we stand in silence,
In the thick, green mist
As I strain to look through the mist
I see my fellow companion,
Staring at me with tears down his face!
I can't do anything except watch in pain
How would you feel,
walking along the wagon
with 10 people slung on top of each other
with my fellow friend twitching on top of the pile!
Can you imagine,
to listen and watch
the wagon bumping up and down
and every bump the dribbles blood and aches to talk
If you have even experimented or even felt,
the things I saw
You would not want to say evr again
'It is glorious to die for your country'.

THE BELLUM
Caesar starts a bellum
With Scipio Africanus,
Digging many fossae
To ambush the copiae.
Monet Scipio of the
Approaching barberi,
The multae Fossae were
Helping the copiae of Caesar.
Later they had to move to a
Spelunca because of the enemy's
Overpowering copiae and saggitae.
The word was datum of the barbarian's defeat.
The victorious troops of Caesar
Et Scipio Africanus were celebrating
Their victoria; sunt delighted
The party was a and very great
The ditches were covered,
The sun set alight.
Victory was greater
Than the very sight.

REFLECTIONS ON THE WAR
I stood like a hunchback with my hands on my cacky
green uniform coughing like a sick rat.
This is suicide! Retreat, we marched backwards firing
and shouting 'Die'. Many fellow comrades didn't make it,
My feet were cut and infected with all the terrible
diseases from the rats in the trenches,
I collapsed on the squidgy poo colour mud battlefield.
My bristly beard was crawling with worms from the
dead corpse battlefield.
Gas Gas! reach for the gas masks. I got my gas
mask on, although I had no energy, from somewhere I got
a sudden adrenalin rush.
'Come on Slater! put it on, put it on!' It was too late,
he had aready breathed in the dark pea green mustard gas.
Without being able to see him I knew exactly where
he was because he was giving out faint screams in a
desperate struggle for his life.
Suddenly Slater appeared in front of me, coughing up
pure blood that splashed all over my eye holes on my
gas mask. His mouth was unclosed as he gripped me
whilst sliding down my body.
He was picked up by the wagon, God he was still alive,
Struggling for his dear life. Imagine you being there
watching your best friend die like a complete spaz,
knowing there is no hope for him but telling him everything
is going to be alright. For God's sake just shoot him to
put him out of his misery.
Everytime the wagon hit a bump, more blood came
spurting out, he was drowning in his own blood.
Read what I have described and ask yourself the question.
Is it really worth dying for your country in
such harsh conditions, knowing that whenever you step
out of a trench onto the battlefield you fear for your life
every second and realising there is a greater chance
of being shot and killed than staying alive?

UNA SONRISA
Estando tan solo
Como un actor sin guión
Estando tan triste
Como el viento sin canción
¿Cómo puede ella sola
Arreglar un dia gris?
Sin ayuda y sin esfuerzo
Que sea un dia feliz
Estando tan lejos
Como aquella estrella del cielo
Estando tan perdido
Como la novia sin su velo
Ella sale del mismo alma
Sin ni siqueira avisarte a ti
Nadie sabe cómo lo hace
Pero saben cuándo está alli
Cuando llega a la cara del triste
Y ya no es sólo un sueño
todo se vuelve un poco más bonito
Siendo de una sonrisa el dueño

LA LIBERTAD DEL RACISMO
¿Dónde se puede la libertad encontrar?
¿De qué color es su cielo?
Nadie lo ha encontrado aún
¿Se puede pisar su suelo?
Como el maldito unicornio
Que ningún hombre caza
A las puertas del nuevo mundo
¿Cuál es tu raza?
Como si estuvieras en tu propia prisíon
Encadenados con los demás como tú
Mejor estás allí acompañado
Que fuera, solo, sin un cielo azul.
Para encontrar la libertad;

wieder.
Der Himmel ist über dem Meer,
Und wenn die Sonne auf geht,
Und der Mond verschwindet hinter dem Horizont.

SCIENCE
Practicals and experiments,
combined with work that never ends,
found in chemistry, physics, biology,
where we also have zoology,
osmosis, cellsand diffusion,
all written down in our conclusion,
sodium, magnesium, copper,
don't forget the test tubes and a dropper,
gamma rays, microwaves and x-rays,
have we finished the topic on waves?
mixing chemicals and making them react,
physics is logical, that's a fact,
liver, lungs and heart,
it's not a question of being smart.
Enter the labs, sit down on a stool,
get out your books, don't act like a fool,
labelling diagrams, notes written down,
Miss won't like you acting a clown,
aim, method, results and conclusion,
talking biology, Miss what is diffusion?
If you've chosen a science for your GCSE's,
beg for mercy, get down on your knees,
but let's better not lie,
unless we'd like to die,
You don't know how much fun it can be,
to take a science as a GCSE!!!!!
