EIC Celebrate United Nations Peace Day
Students and teachers at the English International College celebrated United Nations day of ceasefire and non-violence with songs, a peace pole and staff and students joining together to make the word “peace”.
Marbella – 21, September, 2009 – The 21st September is designated a day of ceasefire and non-violence by the United Nations. It is a day of unity, when the world comes together and fighting stops in various countries allowing much needed medical attention and aid to get to where it is most needed.
Students at the English International College were treated to the choir singing the songs Let There Be Peace On Earth and Imagine during an assembly explaining the importance of Peace Day and the positive impact this day can have on so many lives across the world. Students reflected on how they could be a part of a world peace process in many different ways, from saying sorry to encouraging others to organise their own events for next year.
“I have no idea why people fight each other.” said 11 year old Sarah, “Can’t they see that having a war can never bring peace?”
Following the assembly students moved to the sports field and were quickly marshaled into position by staff to form the word PEACE for a photograph.
After being involved in the assembly, Alex aged 14 commented; “I really feel I have been part of something special today. Most of the stuff on TV is about war, I had never really thought about peace before today.”
Director, Ron Griffin said, “Academic results are important at EIC, but we also feel it is important for students to be involved in events such as Peace Day. Events such as the one today give EIC students the chance to reflect on how they can make a positive impact on the world they live in both in school and in the future. It would be nice if, next year, other schools on the coast could join us in some way to mark this important day.”
