Dreams Do Come True!It is often the case that major undertakings have quite humble beginnings - and the EIC production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' was no exception. A chance remark in the staffroom 'Wouldn't it be terrific if we could stage a Shakespeare play?' soon became a case of 'What? Where? How?' Independently, Luci Willis, David Dunckley and I have always wanted to be involved in an open-air production of a Shakespeare play, having seen many open-air productions in Regents Park, London. To misquote a well-known proverb, if there's a Will(iam Shakespeare), there's a way. Having agreed that 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' would be the appropriate vehicle to display the EIC students' amazing talents, the only problem was what would be the best location for this enterprise? At this point, David Dunckley suggested contacting the International Theatre Studio. Each year the International Theatre Studio organises a charity function, a theatrical event staged in the Condesa Larisch's wonderful gardens. Last year a tornado put paid to any theatrical aspirations and this year, they needed a suitably magical production with which to 'bounce back'. That was invitation enough for us! The result: a spine-tingling, sparkling, glitter-filled evening of laughter, colour, music and sheer magic - in short, on Sunday 16th June 2002, the English International College's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Although the International Theatre Studio agreed to cover the cost of the production, the net proceeds went to charity. Each year, the Condesa chooses a charity which helps members of the local community. It is, therefore, particularly heart-warming to think that the fun we have had in producing this wonderful play has helped people in our community. If you like, it has helped the magic last a little longer. Clare Morris |
