The school year is marked by a series of events - some occur annually and some are special opportunities. This year has been no different but what goes on day by day in the classrooms?

The daily routine is not often seen by a wider audience.

In the primary department the main aim is to create a positive atmosphere within which children feel secure to learn. We learn by ‘having a go’, ‘learning from our mistakes’ and ‘trying our best’. Children do not learn well if they have worries, have feelings of failure, feel unwell, or tired.

Feeling full of energy is important so this year we have insisted on healthy snacks, plenty of water and exercise. The primary PE curriculum is designed especially to cater for young children’s fitness. It was noticeable this year how much better the children performed in the cross country as compared to our first attempt last year.

Keeping the brain active and linking the left and right sides supports learning. Most classes have adopted “brain gym” activities. These can range from word, logic and number puzzles to physical activities such as matching left and right food!

Setting personal targets has become a termly routine. These are discussed with the teacher and displayed in the classroom.

It is important that the targets are SMART

Helping children to become independent learners is important for all primary teachers. This can range from folding your clothes in Early Years to having classroom responsibilities in Key Stage Two.

In terms of the curriculum we want children to be able to undertake tasks on their own. We move from working alongside the teacher to completing research projects and presenting them to the class.

“What we can do in partnership today we can do on our own tomorrow!”

The bright, colourful displays in the classrooms are more than just window dressing. The displays are to support the teaching and to celebrate the learning.

The classrooms are exciting and busy environments. Remember the classroom is your child’s ‘home’ for seven hours a day, five days a week!

'EIC Castillo' - Key Stage One Playground

The play area for our younger pupils has been transformed. During the summer holiday a new, safe surface was laid, a castle-style wall built and seating built in along one side and in the converted sand pit. John and Dave, the ‘famous maintenance crew’, made us wooden castle gates and bought us the castle crests. This holiday the Castle was completed when our play equipment arrived. The ‘castle’ slide and climbing frame has been provided by the PTA from the proceeds of last year’s Summer Fiesta. So, thank you parents for contributing so generously. The EIC Castillo is now a fabulous play area.

Primary Christmas Shows

This year Key Stage Two performed “Hosanna Rock” with some additional items. The band included our recorder players and saxophonist as well as drums, guitar and keyboard. With all Key Stage Two on stage in the choir we were able to accommodate the audience more comfortably!

Key Stage One took us to Santa’s Workshop Wonderland where we enjoyed a range of seasonal songs, poems and dances.

A 60th Birthday

Our beloved Mrs. Ritchie celebrated her 60th birthday in October 2004. Who can believe it! Her energy and enthusiasm never cease to amaze us.

The whole school celebrated with her. Each class presented her with a beautiful card. Every Secondary student who had been taught by her signed cards as well. Mrs. Ritchie was overwhelmed with the presents and cards! Everyone wants to be in her class! The big surprise was a visit from her sister who she had not seen for a few years.

Here’s to many more happy days Margaret!

New additions in Primary

Ms Gail gave birth to the gorgeous Jessica in February. We all enjoyed the baby shower and watching the carry cot fill up with gifts.

Mr. Alex, our PE assistant and his partner, Sonia now have little Aisha – born in April!

Ms Michelle leaves us to have her baby in September. Years 4 and 5 had a baby shower for her during the last week of term.

Saxophones

I am delighted to be working at the EIC and I look forward to the future with great excitement. Learning to play a musical instrument is both challenging and rewarding, but above all I believe that it should be an enjoyable activity. Although I have only been at EIC a short time I can see the huge potential to expand the instrumental music provision with more students playing wind instruments.

Anyone who is interested in ‘having a blow’ on a flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet or trombone should come along and speak to me next September. I do have some instruments to RENT so you can ‘try b4 you buy’.

Mr. Griffin and the music department want to create a ‘wind band’ at EIC and, with YOUR help, it can happen. I want to see the English International College setting the very highest musical standards on the Costa del Sol.

Golf

Daniel Porter and Davut Jones, Year 4, represented the Powergolf Academy in their 'Ryder Cup' style match against the visiting junior team from the Graham Moore, Golf School, based in Cheshire, England. Fifty four holes over two days. This is the second year this match has taken place and the boys are looking forward to next year's match.

Graduation

Year 6 (above) and Year 2 (below) receive their certificates at the end of term as they complete their respective Key Stages.
