THE PRIMARY DEPARTMENT
Review of the Year 2001/2
|
|
|
This school year 2001/02 will go down as a milestone in the history of the Primary Department.
In September we opened five new classes which doubled the size of Years Two to Six. Our teaching staff increased by six as we included a designated Primary ICT teacher.
Ms Amy Ward (Yr.1), Ms Christa Stokes (Yr.2), Ms Sophie Boulton (Yr.3), Ms Ruth Holbrook (Yr.4), Ms Lynne McNicholl (Yr.5), Mr.Robert Maldonado (Yr.6) and Ms Bev Linning (ICT) were all recruited directly from the UK.
To accommodate the extra classes a block of six classrooms was built, in only 8 weeks!! These classrooms are really excellent learning environments with new furniture and equipment.
On September 10th we welcomed one hundred new children and their families. The staff had just one week to set up classrooms once the builders were finished. It was a mammoth effort but all went smoothly thanks to everyone’s hard work and good will.
By the October half term we felt as if we had always had thirteen classes. The new children had made friends, the new staff were settled and a pattern of hard work and high standards was in place.
At Christmas Ms Sophie had to return to the UK and Ms Charlotte commenced maternity leave. Ms Alison and Ms Bridget joined us in January and settled in quickly.
In February Ms Charlotte had a little boy named Jorge (George when he goes to visit the UK!)
During the year we had a number of outings and events. There were our annual spectaculars, though on a larger scale! Having our own ICT teacher with a digital camera means that we can keep a record of all our events and general classroom projects.
Our programme of outings has been arranged so that all year groups make at least one outing into our local cultural area.
There have been trips to the Spanish theatre, a fire station in Fuengirola, a farm, tree planting in Marbella, the castle in Málaga, the Ostrich Farm, Gardens of Marbella and to the mountains at El Torcal. In this way we ensure that we give our curriculum a local flavour and develop the children’s knowledge of the country in which they are living.
The level of achievement in the Primary Department is as high as the top achieving schools in the UK. Last year our end of Key Stage results were outstanding. It must be remembered that a high percentage of our pupils are bi or tri lingual. With this in mind it makes our results have even greater significance.
The success this year has been in assimilating so many new children and staff into the ethos of EIC. This has been done in an open and friendly way yet at the same time maintaining our tradition of high standards in all that we do.
As the year ends it is a time for farewells:
- We wish Year Six a successful move to Secondary School.
- Ms Charlotte is returning to the UK with her husband and new baby. We thank her for being a very professional and motivated teacher.
- Ms Amy completes her one-year contract.

One of our aims in the college is to help our students to become responsible citizens. In the Primary Department it is becoming a tradition for Year 6 to organise a fund raising activity for a chosen charity. This activity encourages children to think outside their own lives to others less fortunate.
In June, Year 6 decided to raise money for two charities. As a college we support Downes Syndrome and Rickets Centres in Morocco. In addition, the children chose the animal charity PADS as in class there have been debates about animal welfare around the world.
Over two days 560 euros was raised at three events:
- Primary Cake Sale
- Coffee morning for year 6 parents and friends
- Fun activities for our 7 - 11 year olds, penalty shoot out, a raffle and games
At a special assembly Year 6 presented cheques to the Secretary of PADS and Dr. Maria Sutcliffe who organises support to the Morocco Centres.
PAD brought a special visitor ‘Bonita’ a pretty little dog that was a BIG hit with the children.

Primary School Christmas Shows |
|
Our end of term Key Stage assemblies soon became ‘shows’ once the children were in the excellent costumes made with the help of our parents.
Key Stage One chose the theme ‘Winter’. Instead of ‘Raining Men’ our Reception class sang and danced to ‘It’s Raining Snowmen’!! We heard a selection of winter poems so ably read by Year 2 pupils.
Key Stage Two told us all about Christmas Around the World. ‘The Four Geese a Laying’ were a sight to behold!
The ‘shows’ were lively and entertaining ways in which to complete a busy term.

P.S.H.E. at EIC
Class 5c thought about how they could improve their future. They each wrote down three targets and attached them to the TARGET TREE, in the hope that they too will be able to grow and improve.

Visit to Fuengirola Fire Station
|
|
|
In March students from Reception and Year 1 had a fun and informative visit to the Fuengirola Fire Department. Some of the children were able to dress up and use the equipment, giving great inspiration for their future career choices!

Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee - June 2002.
On Friday May 31st the Primary Department celebrated the Jubilee in true British style prior to closing for the official Jubilee Days June 3rd and 4th.
The union flag flew in every window, we dressed in patriotic red, white and blue, ate true British fare and had a thoroughly good time taking part in special activities and parties.
Our Spanish chef joined in by learning to cook Shepherd’s Pie, Apple Crumble and English Custard.
We feel that it is important that all our students experience the history of the nation on which our school is dedicated. We all enjoyed a day of special activities.

Year 6 Leave Primary School
On Thursday 27th June a very special assembly took place in the school hall. Year 6 treated us to some wonderful songs and reminiscences of their time in the Primary School. Mr. David Dunckley then presented each ‘leaver’ with a Primary Certificate. To those who are going elsewhere for their Secondary education, we wish you the best of luck. To those who are staying with us, we’ll see you all in September.
